Pre-Purchase Inspections

$165 to find out what you are actually buying, at the seller's curb, before the money moves - and in this city the undercarriage matters more than the paint.

At a glance

  • Private sellers, dealer lots and Facebook Marketplace meets, anywhere in the service area
  • Full multi-module scan including stored history the seller cannot clear away
  • Salt-belt undercarriage inspection included - lines, mounts, subframe, rockers
  • Written report with photos, same day, and a straight verdict you can negotiate with

Buy the underside, not the paint

A car that has spent its life in Milwaukee can look immaculate above the door sills and be structurally finished below them. Shiny paint and a clean interior tell you how a previous owner treated the cabin. They tell you nothing at all about what six winters of brine did to the subframe mounts, the brake lines or the rocker seams.

So that is where a serious inspection here starts. Every one includes the undercarriage check, graded and photographed, and it is the single item most likely to change your mind about a car - or to knock a real number off the asking price.

What a scan tells you that a seller will not

Codes can be cleared before you arrive. Stored history, freeze frame data, readiness monitors and module-level fault records are much harder to erase cleanly, and they leave a trail. A car whose monitors are all conveniently incomplete was scanned recently, and that is worth knowing.

We also read the service history out of the car where the vehicle stores it, check the mileage against what the modules report, and look for the specific pattern of an airbag module or cluster that does not match everything around it.

The report, and what you do with it

You get a written report the same day with photographs, findings graded urgent, soon or fine, and a plain verdict. Not a score out of ten - a paragraph saying what we would do in your position.

Plenty of our reports end with buy it. Some end with buy it and use these three things to negotiate. A few end with walk away, and those are the ones people thank us for. We have no relationship with the seller and nothing to gain either way, which is the entire point of paying an independent.

From the job book

What this work looks like

Real repairs, photographed on the job. These are jobs from our wider mechanic network rather than Milwaukee customers — we say so on every page rather than implying otherwise.

Professional Autel MaxiCheck tablet held in one hand listing multiple stored and pending trouble codes
A full-system scan, not a parts-counter code pull. Pending, current and permanent codes all read separately, and every module gets asked - not just the engine.
Open air filter housing revealing a dirty engine air filter with leaves and debris on its surface
Airbox opened during a drivability complaint. Leaves, grit and a filter that has not been out in years - and every one of those restricts the air the engine is metering.
Vehicle infotainment screen showing a service record with a date and an odometer reading
Service history read out of the car itself. It is one of the fastest ways to find out whether the maintenance a seller promised actually happened.

Common questions

How much is a pre-purchase inspection?
$165 anywhere in the service area, which includes the scan, the road test, the undercarriage check and the written photo report. No add-ons.
Will a dealer let you inspect a car on their lot?
A reputable one will, and a refusal is information in itself. We turn up, work quietly and do not get in anyone's way. If a seller will not allow an independent inspection, that is usually your answer.
Can you inspect a car for me if I am buying from out of state?
Yes - it is one of the most useful things we do. You get the report and the photos and you never have to see the car in person until you have decided.
How long does it take?
About 90 minutes on site, and you have the written report the same day. Book a little ahead if you can, though we understand a good used car does not wait.

Something wrong with the car? Tell us where it is parked.
