Tune-Ups, Spark Plugs & Filters

A misfire that has been ignored for a month is the fastest way to destroy a catalytic converter, which turns a $200 job into a four-figure one - and it will fail you at the emissions station on the way.

At a glance

  • Spark plugs, coils, wires, air filters, cabin filters and fuel system cleaning
  • Misfire diagnosis by cylinder, not by guesswork or by replacing all six coils
  • Rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy and a flashing check engine light
  • Cabin filters matter here - a blocked one is a big part of a weak winter defrost

A misfire is a clock, and it is running

When a cylinder misfires, unburnt fuel goes down the exhaust and lights off inside the catalytic converter, which is not designed to burn fuel. Do that for a week and you are shortening the converter's life. Do it for a month and you are buying one. A steady check engine light for a misfire means fix it soon. A flashing one means stop driving now.

The diagnosis is per-cylinder and it is not hard when you have the right tools. Misfire counters tell us which cylinder. Swapping a coil to another cylinder and watching whether the fault follows tells us whether it is the coil. Compression and a leak-down test tell us whether it is mechanical. That sequence takes about an hour and it is dramatically cheaper than replacing parts until it stops.

Plugs are not a mileage ritual

Modern iridium and platinum plugs genuinely last 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and changing them at 30,000 because someone's father used to is money burned. Changing them at 140,000 because nobody looked is worse - they seize into aluminum heads, and on some engines that turns a routine job into a repair.

The other half of the job is what the old plugs tell you. Color, deposits, gap and wear pattern are a readout of what the engine has been doing, and a plug that comes out oily or washed with fuel is pointing at a fault a scan tool has not flagged yet.

Filters, and the winter defrost nobody connects to them

Engine air filters are cheap, take five minutes and are checked free on every visit. A restricted one measurably hurts economy and can genuinely set a lean code.

Cabin filters are the ones people forget entirely, and in this climate they matter more than they look. A cabin filter clogged with two years of leaves and grit chokes the airflow that clears your windshield in January. Half the people who tell us the heater is weak have a heater that is fine and a filter that is a solid mat.

From the job book

What this work looks like

Real repairs, photographed on the job. These are jobs from our wider mechanic network rather than Milwaukee customers, and we say so on every page rather than implying otherwise.

Handheld OBD2 scan tool held in an orange nitrile glove showing fault code P0303, cylinder 3 misfire detected
P0303 - cylinder 3 misfire, stored. The code tells you which cylinder is unhappy. It does not tell you whether the cause is a coil, a plug, an injector or a leak, and that is the part you are actually paying for.
Handheld code reader on dark ground at night showing fault code P0303 flagged as permanent
The same fault, flagged as permanent. A permanent code cannot be cleared with a button - the car erases it on its own only after it watches the repair hold across real drive cycles.
Engine bay of a four-cylinder sedan with the intake manifold and airbox in view and a cordless ratchet resting inside
Plugs, coils and the filter all live under this plastic. Half a tune-up is getting the intake apart cleanly and back together without breaking a single clip.
Open air filter housing with leaves, seed pods and debris collected inside the empty airbox
Airbox opened during a drivability complaint, filter already out. Every leaf in there spent months restricting air the engine was trying to measure.
Close view of a clogged air filter pleated element covered with dirt and plant debris
The same filter out of the box. A five minute check that nobody charges for and almost nobody does.

Common questions

How often do spark plugs need doing?
Check your manual - typically 60,000 to 100,000 miles on modern iridium plugs. What matters more than the number is not leaving them so long that they seize into the head.
My car failed emissions. Can you fix it?
Usually. We cannot perform the state test - that has to happen at a Wisconsin Vehicle Inspection Program station - but we can read exactly why it failed, fix the cause and get the readiness monitors set so it passes on the retest.
Will a tune-up improve my gas mileage?
If something is actually wrong, yes and noticeably. If the engine is healthy, no - a tune-up is not a performance upgrade, and anyone promising you 20% is selling something.
Do you replace cabin filters?
Yes, and it takes about ten minutes on most cars. If your winter defrost has got weaker over a couple of years, start here before anyone quotes you a blower motor.
