Transmission Diagnosis & Service

Plenty of transmission complaints are not the transmission - a solenoid, a sensor, a mount or fluid that has never been changed - and finding that out costs a diagnostic rather than a rebuild.

At a glance

  • Fluid and filter service, solenoids, sensors, mounts, linkages and external leaks
  • Full scan of the transmission control module including adaptive learning values
  • We do not rebuild transmissions in the field, and we will say so on the phone
  • A shudder, a flare and a hard shift are three different faults with three different prices

Diagnose before anyone says rebuild

The word rebuild gets used far too early. A slipping or harsh-shifting automatic can be a shift solenoid, a speed sensor, a wiring fault, low or degraded fluid, a collapsed mount letting the whole assembly move, or a software adaptation that has learned bad habits. All of those are dramatically cheaper than internal work, and all of them are findable.

We scan the transmission control module, read its stored and pending faults, look at the adaptive values it has learned, watch line pressure and gear commands live on a road test, and check the fluid condition and level properly - which on many modern transmissions means at temperature, through a fill plug, with no dipstick to make it easy.

Fluid, and the argument about changing it

You will hear that changing the fluid in a high-mileage automatic will kill it. That myth comes from a real phenomenon - a transmission already worn enough to be relying on the friction characteristics of degraded fluid can fail shortly after a fluid change, and the change gets blamed for a failure that was already arriving.

The right answer is not to avoid fluid changes. It is to change fluid on schedule so you never own the transmission that is in that state. If you have inherited a car with 130,000 unknown miles, we will look at the fluid's condition and give you a straight read rather than a rule of thumb.

What we will not do

We do not rebuild automatics at the curb, and we do not pretend to. Internal work needs the unit out, on a bench, in a clean space, and anyone offering that from a van is not doing it properly.

What we do is make sure you are not paying for a rebuild you do not need, handle everything external, service it properly, and if it genuinely does need internal work, tell you what it costs and what your realistic options are - including whether the car is worth it.

From the job book

What this work looks like

Real repairs, photographed on the job. These are jobs from our wider mechanic network rather than Milwaukee customers — we say so on every page rather than implying otherwise.

Some jobs cannot be finished at the curb. When that happens we say so early, arrange the tow, and the diagnostic time still comes off the repair.

Common questions

My transmission shudders at light throttle. What is it?
Classic torque converter clutch shudder, very often fluid-related and sometimes fixed by a proper fluid service. Worth diagnosing early, because it is one of the few transmission complaints with a cheap ending.
Does cold weather affect shifting?
Yes. Cold fluid is thick and many transmissions deliberately shift differently until they warm up. Firm shifts on a January morning that smooth out after five minutes are usually normal. Shifts that stay wrong once warm are not.
Do you do fluid changes at my house?
Yes on most vehicles. Some modern units need a specific fill procedure at a controlled temperature, and a few need to be done on a level lift - we will tell you which yours is when you book.
Can you tell me if a transmission is failing before I buy the car?
To a useful degree, yes - as part of a pre-purchase inspection. Fluid condition, module fault history, adaptive values and a road test through every gear tell you a great deal about what a seller has been living with.
