Is undercoating worth it in Milwaukee?
Yes, for a car you plan to keep through more salt winters. Pick a thin oil spray, put it on every year, and start while the metal is still clean. Skip the thick rubber coat and the dealer package. Neither one gets into the seams where salt rust starts.
The most linked answer online says no. Consumer Reports wrote in August 2018 that new cars come with corrosion protection, so a dealer's $800 undercoating package isn't needed. That's good advice for the dealer add on. It's a short note, though. It never talks about salt, about older cars, or about oil sprays.
Salt is the whole question here. A 2017 AAA fact sheet found 15 percent of drivers in winter states paid for a salt rust repair in five years. The average bill was $490 a repair. Across the country, that came to about $3 billion a year.
Factory protection is real. It just wasn't built for ten Wisconsin winters. Brake lines, fuel lines, exhaust and subframe mounts are where it runs out first.
How Much Salt Hits a Milwaukee Car
A lot, and it changes by winter. The WisDOT 2026 winter fact sheet lists the salt used on state highways alone.
| Winter | Salt used | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 to 2023 | 483,000 tons | Heaviest of the three |
| 2023 to 2024 | 255,000 tons | Lightest of the three |
| 2024 to 2025 | 332,000 tons | Most recent on the sheet |
The same sheet says Wisconsin averages 29 snow events and 62 inches of snow a year. That's state roads only. City streets get their own.
Milwaukee's public works crews spread 57,787 tons a season on average from 2013 to 2017. A later five year average was 36,508 tons, per city data reported by FOX6 (November 8, 2023). The city has sprayed brine before storms on a regular basis since 2017. Brine is salt already dissolved in water. It sticks to the road, and it sticks to your car.

What is the difference between rustproofing and undercoating?
Undercoating is a thick layer on the underside. It blocks stones and spray but can crack and hold water. Rustproofing usually means a thin oil that creeps into seams, welds and the inside of panels. Shops use both words for both jobs, so ask what goes on the car.
Krown explains the split well on its FAQ page. A traditional undercoat forms a thick barrier, and some can harden, crack or pull away. Its own product is a thin oil that stays fluid and creeps into welds and cavities. The table below lines up the common types.
| Type | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Oil or lanolin spray | Thin film that creeps into seams and inside panels | Drips at first, needs a yearly coat |
| Rubber or tar undercoat | Thick layer sprayed on the underside | Cracks with age and can hold water |
| Dealer package | Often a coating plus a warranty, sold with the car | High price, read what it covers |
| Underside wash only | Rinses salt off before it can work | Lasts until the next salty road |
For a Milwaukee car, the oil spray wins. Rust here starts where salt water sits. That's inside rocker panels, behind clips and along welds. A thick coat can't reach those spots. A thin oil can.
What is the average cost to undercoat a car?
A yearly oil spray runs about $160 to $180 a car at one big chain. Krown posts $159.95 for a small car and $179.95 for a full size pickup. A dealer package is the pricey one. Consumer Reports had a reader quoted $800 at the time of a new car sale.
Krown's pricing page lists flat yearly rates. Sedan or small car $159.95. Minivan, SUV and two door pickup $169.95. Extra large SUV, three and four door pickup, heavy duty pickup and full size van $179.95. Prices can vary by location, so ask the shop for its own number.
Now do the math over five winters. A small car sprayed every year costs about $800. That's the same as the dealer package Consumer Reports told its reader to skip. The difference is what you get. Five fresh coats of oil reach the seams every year. One thick coat put on at the dealer starts aging the day you drive off.
Five winters, by the dollar
Posted Krown rates times five, the Consumer Reports dealer quote, and AAA's average repair.
So is it cheaper than rust? Not on every car. A lease you return in three years won't pay it back. A paid off car you plan to drive for eight more winters is a different story. One burst brake line or a rotted subframe mount can cost more than all five coats.
How long does undercoating last?
An oil spray lasts about one year. Krown says one application gives 12 months of protection, which is why it sells it as a yearly job. A rubber or tar coat stays on longer, but once it cracks it can trap salty water against the steel.
Per Krown's FAQ, most of the drip happens in the first 24 to 48 hours. The same page says corrosion is most active in spring and summer, when it warms up. So the salt you picked up in January keeps working long after the snow melts.
A Fall Plan for a Salt Car
A coating is one step. The rest costs little or nothing. AAA's rust fact sheet lists most of these.
- Wash it before winter. Get last season's dirt and salt off first.
- Touch up chips. Bare metal on the body rusts first.
- Look at the brake lines. Flaky orange scale on thin tubes is a warning.
- Spray on a dry day. Oil goes on clean, dry metal.
- Wash the underside on thaw days. Use car wash soap, not dish soap.
- Do one last wash in spring. AAA says leftover salt keeps working all year.
The brake line step matters most. Wisconsin was on NHTSA's salt state list when it closed its brake line rust probe in 2015. It told drivers to wash the underside several times during and after winter, per CBS News (April 9, 2015). If a line is already scaling, read our Milwaukee brake line cost guide before you spray anything.

Asked and Answered
What are the disadvantages of undercoating a car?
Oil sprays drip for a day or two and need a new coat every year. Some shops drill small access holes. Rubber coats crack with age and can hide rust as it grows. And no coating fixes metal that already has holes in it.
Krown says on its FAQ that it drills small holes to reach closed panels, then treats and plugs them. Ask any shop where it drills and how it seals the holes. Park on cardboard for a night or two after the spray.
Can you undercoat a car that already has rust?
Yes, with an oil spray. It slows the surface rust you can see and the rust you can't. Don't put a rubber coat over rust. That seals the moisture in. If a frame rail or a rocker already has holes, it needs a repair first, not a spray.
Look for holes you can push a screwdriver into, or scale that falls off in sheets. That's past the spray stage. Get the underside inspected and photographed first, then decide what the car is worth.
Is washing the underside as good as undercoating?
Washing helps a lot, and it's cheap. NHTSA tells drivers in salt states to wash the underside several times during and after winter. A wash removes salt. A coating keeps water off the metal between washes. Do both on a car you want to keep.
A thaw day is the best time to wash. Salt does its worst work when it's wet and above freezing. AAA's fact sheet adds one more wash in spring, since leftover salt keeps working all year.
When should you undercoat a car in Milwaukee?
Fall, before the first brine run, on a dry day after a good wash. Krown says a yearly coat covers 12 months no matter the season. Fall timing just means the coat is fresh when the salt is heaviest.
Milwaukee crews spray brine before storms, per the FOX6 report. So the first salty road can come before the first real snow. A coat put on in October is ready for it.
